「SHOGUN」なぜ米国でウケた 時代考証担当の教授が説明 戦闘シーンだけでなく取り入れたものは？（スポニチアネックス）｜ｄメニューニュース
◇ゴールデン・グローブ賞 「SHOGUN 将軍」が作品賞、主演男優賞、主演女優賞、助演男優賞の4冠 米ゴールデン・グローブ賞で真田広之の主演男優賞を含む4冠を達成した「SHOGUN 将軍」。なぜ米国でここまで高い評価を受けたのか。同作で時代考証を担当した国際日本文化研究センターのフレデリック・クレインス教授（54）にその理由を聞いた。 ベルギー出身で、今作の舞台でもある戦国文化史が専門のクレインス氏。日本を研究して40年以上の同氏が時代考証のオファーを受けたのは21年1月。その日のうちに1話の脚本が送られてきたが「一から全部書き直さなければならない状態」だった。一言一句、舞台である慶長期の言葉に書き換え、1話あたり10日以上の日数をかけ脚本を仕上げた。 当初考証は脚本のみの予定だったが、初期のセットや衣装のデザインは「日本ではなく東南アジアのようなデザインで、全然駄目だった」と回想する。「歴史家として、研究してきた時代を膨大な資金と土地を使って再現するチャンスだと思った」と、予定になかった演出面の考証も買って出た。 当初は現地に日本人がおらず「日本らしさ」の創出に苦労したが、同年夏からは真田ら時代劇のスペシャリストが現地入り。「真田さんとの二段構えになってから、修正のスピードとクオリティーが格段に上がった」と作品の完成度はさらに高まっていった。 クレインス氏はコロナ禍や仕事の都合で現場を訪問できず、修正や助言はメールで送信。送付した資料は合計で2179ページに及んだ。現地では、スタッフがその内容を要約し900ページのマニュアルにして配布。同氏の指摘を共有した。 それまでハリウッドで製作される時代劇は戦闘シーンがメインだった。しかし同氏は、できるだけ慶長期を再現したいという思いから、茶の湯や連歌などの文化的要素を取り入れるよう提案。「特に武士が連歌を重宝していたことは知られておらず、外国人からしたら新しい発見だった」と手応えを口にする。「海外の視聴者が受け入れやすい形でまだ見ぬ日本の文化を伝えられた。日本文化の入門になる作品になった」と評価した。
