Most of this week’s intrigue centers around the Atlanta Falcons’ decision to change quarterbacks. All eyes will be on his performance in his debut against the New York Giants.

Naming only four other Falcons that matter in this must-win matchup is a challenge, but only because there are so many alternative options.

Michael Penix

Expectations are high for Penix in his NFL debut, but the Falcons’ game plan will likely focus on limiting what is on his plate in this initial outing. That will likely come via a strategy focusing on the ground game and asking Penix to be a game manager. But there will be opportunities for the young quarterback to show off his arm and his mobility to see if it can bolster a struggling Falcons passing attack.

Darnell Mooney

A player who will be a key part of that passing attack is wide receiver Darnell Mooney. As the receiver who seemed to have the strongest connection with former starting quarterback Kirk Cousins, it’ll be important for Mooney to build a rapport with Penix quickly.

With fellow wideout Drake London battling a knee injury and tight end Kyle Pitts’ inconsistency, Penix’s early success could hinge on his and Mooney’s connection.

Kaleb McGary

Another player who will be under more scrutiny with Penix in the lineup is right tackle Kaleb McGary. With Penix being a southpaw, McGary will protect the young quarterback’s blindside.

McGary is best as a run blocker and questionable as a pass protector, which will factor heavily into the team’s run-first game plan against the Giants and outside linebacker Brian Burns. How McGary holds up against Burns could be a big factor in determining if the team looks to retain him in 2025 or seek an upgrade at the position this offseason.

A.J. Terrell

Cornerback A.J. Terrell will also have an important matchup against Giants rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers. The Falcons haven’t asked Terrell to shadow too many opposing No. 1 receivers this year, and this week offers an opportunity to do things differently.

Given the recent struggles of other corners Mike Hughes and Dee Alford against the Minnesota Vikings, the Falcons would be wise to limit how many times they face a dynamic speedster like Nabers.

Riley Patterson

Another change to the lineup besides quarterback will come at kicker, with Younghoe Koo heading to injured reserve. Stepping in for him will be Patterson. Koo has been inconsistent this year, with many questioning whether or not the team will bring him back in 2025.

Should Patterson kick well over these last three games, beginning on Sunday against the Giants, there will be an opportunity for him to audition for a more extended role next season.
