Macy’s lists 66 ‘underproductive’ stores set for closure; over 80 closures still to come

Macy’s has named 66 of the 150 stores that it’s planning to close as part of its revitalization plan.

The retailer announced back in February 2024 plans to shut down 150 “underproductive” Macy’s store locations by 2026. The plan “is designed to return the company to sustainable, profitable sales growth,’ Macy’s said in a press release Thursday.

Macy’s still plans to close a total of about 150 underproductive stores, while investing in its 350 current Macy’s locations, through the company’s 2026 fiscal year, which ends Jan. 30, 2027, the company said in the press release.

“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service,” Macy’s CEO and chairman Tony Spring said in a statement.

The company previously said it also plans to open about 15 new Bloomingdale’s stores and at least 30 new Bluemercury stores – and remodel about 30 Bluemercury stores, too.

Overall sales for Macy’s declined 2.4% to $4.7 billion, during the third quarter, which ended Nov. 2, 2024.

But sales at Macy’s First 50 locations, where the company is focusing its revitalization efforts, rose 1.9%, marking a third consecutive quarter of sales growth, the company said. Sales at Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury showed increased sales, too, compared to a year ago.
