Andy Cohen Brings Out Tequila 5 Minutes Into Hosting New Year’s Eve, Promises Shots on the Hour

Andy Cohen and Anderson Cooper are in for quite a fun night.

As the longtime friends kicked off their hosting duties on CNN’s annual New Year’s Eve special, it wasn’t long before Cohen took out the tequila.

“We have a night of music, comedy, alcohol, and we have so many great guests. I am very excited for this, our eighth year together,” said Cohen, 56, to which Cooper, 57, replied, “And they said we wouldn’t last!”

After the two bantered back and forth on New Year’s Eve Live—and even cut to footage of Cooper from earlier this year when he was hit by Styrofoam during his coverage of Hurricane Milton—Cooper joked about blacking out on CNN.

“Well, guess what? That’s where I come in,” said Cohen as he grabbed his bottle of tequila and two glasses (approximately just a mere five minutes into the broadcast). “I brought the tequila, Anderson. I brought the shot glasses.”

“We are going to do this at the top of every hour,” he explained to those watching at home. “And we want you to join us.”

He continued, “That’s the fun of New Year’s Eve… Anderson doesn’t drink. Whether you are at home alone or with family or with one other person, we are all here together. This is an incredible community that we’ve built up together over these eight years, and so I am excited.”

“I’m starting with a big one,” said Cohen, as he poured a large shot of tequila. “I’m a little edgy right now.”

In an exclusive interview with Parade published earlier this month, Cohen explained just how wild he and his co-host would get this New Year’s Eve.

Still, “we always drink responsibly,” said Cohen. “You can be wild and drink responsibly, I feel. Because wild to me just means fun, and our directive is to have fun. That’s what I’m focused on. My focus is to make [Anderson] loosen up and to create a lot of laughs and memorable moments.”

After a somewhat sober start to 2023, Cohen and fellow New Year’s Eve Live co-host Cooper are once again be imbibing as they celebrate the year’s end.

For those who are watching the New Year’s Eve festivities as they party the night away with friends, Cohen suggested “a lot of water” the next day for those struggling with a hangover. Plus, he added, “some Advil… and like a cheeseburger, if you can keep it down!”
