Coroner identifies suspect in Mahomet triple homicide

MAHOMET, Ill. (WICS) — The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the suspect in the Mahomet triple homicide.

We’re told John R. Lyons, 24, of Westchester was identified the suspect.

At 11:38 p.m. on Wednesday Berwyn Police Officers responded to the 1800 block for a report of a male subject with a gun.

Responding officers located Lyons who then fled on foot and escaped from officers.

Lyons forced entry into a residence in the 1800 block of Wenonah Ave. where he shot and killed two dogs.

Officers then observed Lyons fleeing Eastbound into a yard on the 1800 block of Home Ave. Lyons disobeyed the officers” verbal commands to stop and proceeded to shoot at police officers.

Berwyn Police Officers returned fire and fatally struck Lyons. No officers were injured during this incident.

Early reports indicate that Lyons was wanted for a triple homicide committed in Mahomet, IL earlier in the day on December 18.

The Champaign County Coroner, says Janis L. Mason, 61, Caleb M. Mason, 23, and Sara E. Mason, 26 were shot and killed.
