FRISCO, Texas – After losing the 2024 season finale to the Washington Commanders and finishing the 2024 season with a 7-10 record, the Cowboys will select 12th overall in the upcoming 2025 NFL draft.
The last time the Cowboys had the 12th overall pick, it worked out pretty well for them, as they selected Micah Parsons out of Penn State in the 2021 NFL draft. Their 2025 12th overall pick will mark just the seventh time since 2000 that the Cowboys have picked within the top 15 of the first round.
Along with their first round selection, the Cowboys own their second (34th overall), third (76th), fifth (148th), and sixth (186th) round picks in the 2025 NFL draft. According to Over the Cap, Dallas is expected to receive three compensatory fifth round picks as well as a sixth and seventh round compensatory selection. Those come after Dallas lost Tyron Smith, Dorance Armstrong Jr., Tyler Biadasz, Tony Pollard, and Dante Fowler Jr.
In a trade with the Carolina Panthers, the Cowboys gained an additional seventh round pick (228th overall) alongside wide receiver Jonathan Mingo. In exchange, Dallas sent their 2025 fourth round pick back to Carolina. That marks back-to-back years that the Cowboys have traded their fourth round selections, with 2023’s pick going to San Francisco in exchange for quarterback Trey Lance.
If that is in fact the compensatory picks scenario, it gives the Cowboys 11 picks in the 2025 NFL draft, the most they’ve had since 2021 when they selected Parsons, Osa Odighizuwa and Israel Mukuamu amongst others. The Cowboys have made 72 draft day trades since Jerry Jones bought the team in 1989, and they’d of course be eligible to do the same depending on how the chips fall into place.
The current first round NFL draft order, excluding playoff teams, is as follows:
- Tennessee Titans
- Cleveland Browns
- New York Giants
- New England Patriots
- Jacksonville Jaguars
- Las Vegas Raiders
- New York Jets
- Carolina Panthers
- New Orleans Saints
- Chicago Bears
- San Francisco 49ers
- Dallas Cowboys
- Arizona Cardinals
- Indianapolis Colts
- Atlanta Falcons
- Miami Dolphins
- Cincinnati Bengals
- Seattle Seahawks
