Patriots captain won’t play season finale, Joe Milton III active for first time

FOXBOROUGH — A productive season for Hunter Henry has come to an early end.

The veteran tight end is inactive for Sunday’s season finale against the Bills at Gillette Stadium. Henry had been listed as questionable for a foot injury. In his ninth NFL season, Henry set career highs in receptions (66) and receiving yards (674) in Alex Van Pelt’s offense. Earlier this week, Henry said he was hopeful that the offensive coordinator returns next season so the returning pieces can continue to evolve within his scheme.

“There will be changes in a locker room on a year-to-year basis, but there will be a carryover of guys,” Henry said. “So when you can carryover an offense into an offseason you can sometimes build upon it in a lot of ways. When you bring in someone new, you’re learning that scheme and trying to implement it… when you already know a scheme you can grow in it and evolve it to make it your own. I can speak personally on routes and different things. If I already know the scheme and route, it’s my canvas. I can draw it this way, I can draw it this way. I can do routes different ways.

“I think when you just carry things over, I’ve loved AVP. I’ve loved the energy. I’ve loved the offense that he’s brought here. I really do think it’s a great scheme and I think there’s a lot of room for growth with everybody with it.”

There were no major surprises elsewhere on the inactive list, as Christian Gonzalez had already been ruled out with a concussion and Lester Cotton, Sidy Sow, Mitchell Wilcox, and JaMycal Hasty will serve as healthy scratches.

Rookie quarterback Joe Milton III is active for the first time this season. The sixth-rounder served as the emergency third quarterback in New England’s first 16 games, but the Patriots are dressing all three quarterbacks for the season finale.

“I approach the week just like every other week. It’s another game week. Another opportunity. It’s a new week—a new blessing. We’ve got a new year started (this week). I feel great,” Milton said. “No matter what, I’m always down to compete. My high school coach always told me, competition creates extension, so I feel like no matter what, as long as you compete, at the end of the day, you always win. If my name gets called, go out there and compete.”
