Where Was Michelle Obama During Jimmy Carter’s Funeral?

On Thursday, a gaggle of former presidents, vice-presidents, and their spouses convened at Washington’s National Cathedral for former president Jimmy Carter’s funeral. The Clintons, Bushes, and Bidens willfully ignored Melania Trump’s distractingly large collar, while Barack Obama giggled with Donald Trump and Kamala Harris exchanged silently suffering looks with her husband, Doug. One person who was noticeably absent, though, was Michelle Obama.

A rep for the Obamas confirmed to USA Today that the former First Lady was “not in attendance at President Carter’s National Funeral Service,” adding that “Mrs. Obama sends her thoughts and prayers to the Carter family, and everyone who loved and learned from the remarkable former president.” As for why? According to CNN, Michelle’s advisers say she’s on an extended vacation in Hawaii and had a scheduling conflict with the funeral.

The Obamas’ spokesperson has not confirmed whether Michelle will be back in time for Trump’s inauguration on January 20.
